Most people who get started with Internet Marketing start out doing keyword research and decide that’s it. The truth is the keyword research process can be performed quickly and efficiently and in many ways is the same as starting a business.

Yes, a business would need to raise funds to get started but it doesn’t cost a cent to get started with Internet Marketing, just a few hours of work and some creativity.

What I have done with my keyword research is divided the Internet into many sub-networks and then looked for keyword phrases that could be used to indicate content, expertise, product, service, opinion or some other factor that a potential customer might be looking for. I have put them into three groups of one each.



Group #1 is the best because it indicates that I want to sell these three things. 

Group #2 indicates that I want to offer this three thing

Group #3 indicates that I want to offer these three things to the customer. The third group would be used to indicate the value of a free offer that I am going to offer. For example, if I wanted to give away something to my visitors at no cost, I would put that in the third group and have that be a free offer.

Once I have these down I can choose to put any type of keywords I like into each group. I can also put lots of spaces or hyphens in between the groups. I can mix them up. What I will do is make sure that the phrase I am going to use is in both group #1 and #2.

I am trying to make sure that I have a high percentage chance of those three phrases that I am targeting to be chosen. I will also use the three phrases that I want them to take home on many times. For example, in the second group I would use the phrase “how to train your dog”. In group #3 I would use the phrase “how to train your dog to …” etc. The idea is to try to maximize my chance of a good hit.

Once I have this down I can also use the same process for many other sub-networks of the Internet. I have also used the same process for newspapers and magazines and Web sites and blogs and Web pages and videos and audio files and image files and other file types. 

All you do is start with a few keywords and see how many sub-networks your target audience has and how many potential keywords your target audience might use. After that, you will use your keyword research and put your main keyword in some as many places as possible.

It doesn’t feel good to be misrepresented, does it?

So how do you make an impression on your audience without sounding like a salesman? How do you distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack without looking like an idiot? How do you create a difference like you, without everyone else copying you and looking like a copycat?

Here’s what I’ve found to work.

1. Personality – You may have heard the term “Nicheology” or “The Human Factor” or something similar. In short, your brand’s personality. Take a look at things from the perspective of your target market. What do they like about you? How do you stand out from the crowd? What excites them about you? Do they associate your site with quality, or just quantity, or? What makes you stand out? What are the features of your site that your target audience loves?

2. Positioning – You may also have heard the term “Positioning”. Basically, why do your target market want to buy from you? Who are your competitors? What makes you unique? How do you differentiate yourself from them? What are the features of your site that your target market doesn’t want to deal with? How do you stand out from the crowd? Your niche will come from a position, and not from the competition.

3. Content – Are you providing great content? Are your articles written with quality and high interest in mind? Are your articles engaging and not just random information? Do they build up to something? Is your site constantly changing and growing? Is your site constantly developing and changing?

4. Pricing – Are you offering something for nothing? Is your site offering the best for the least amount of money? If not, how can you compete?

5. Communication – Are you engaging your target market? Do you understand them well enough to engage them? Do you have a firm grasp of their wants and needs? Do you have a feel for what they’re worried about? You have to understand them well enough to connect them to your product. How can you make them laugh, or make them happy? How can you provide information that they want? These are the things that give you a huge competitive advantage.

If you’re still trying to figure out how to become a market leader, think about these ideas and you’ll be on your way to getting noticed. And you’ll get noticed by the people you need to.

Yet you start marketing to your list right away. I don’t think it is a good idea to send them email offers to purchase right away.

Why not wait and start again a few months down the road?
 Or another 2 months down the road? Or two years down the road?

Think about it. Maybe it is a couple years down the road when your list should have moved on and start looking for other services to buy.

If you are building your list and paying $20 bucks a month for it, then you should be waiting for your list to “grow.” The $20 bucks a month is not going to grow your list in a day. But you can start again when your list has moved on and should be looking for other services to buy.

2. TOO MUCH, TOO SOON

I have talked to some of my clients that were only building their list and waiting a year and had their list up to 30,000 subscribers. In one of my seminars I told them to break down their list into 3,000 subscribers, which I thought was very aggressive. Then I checked my notes and it was extremely conservative.

People that are not even reading your emails, will be the ones that will be the ones that will unsubscribe from your list. And you know what that means. So how do you then become open and then convert those 5,500 email subscribers into buyers?

4. Not Building a Website.

Do not talk about your website to your list. Not talking about your website means you are losing them. That is unless you have built a website and are sending emails to them on a daily basis. Then they will come to know what your website is all about. And they are also the ones that you will keep because they are also curious. In that case you will get renewed interest from your list. So building a website and keeping your email list interested in your website is a way to maintain your business

These are just a few of the reasons. If you are not sure about what exactly I am talking about that is another topic that I would like to talk about on another day. As you can see, not everyone that comes to join your list will end up buying something. So how do you retain a customer for life?
